CBFC has decided to pass Padmavati with ‘UA’ certification if certain conditions are adhered to…
As per latest reports, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s much troubled film Padmavati has finally been awarded a U/A certificate but with some suggested modifications and a likely change in the title to Padmavat, to clarify its “attributed material/ creative source”.
Other key modifications include the use of disclaimers, particularly one clarifying the practice of Sati is not being glorified. The song Ghoomar will also undergo some modifications to befit the character of Rani Padmini.
The film was reviewed by a special panel constituted by the CBFC which included historians after the makers of the film stated that it was partially based on historical facts.
CBFC chairman Prasoon Joshi says the reports of 26 cuts, appearing in a section of media, are incorrect. “They must have counted the incorrect spellings of some locations for which changes had been suggested,” he clarified, adding, “There are no cuts, only modifications.”
Padmavati‘, the 190-crore film directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, has drawn angry protests in Rajasthan where fringe groups like the Karni Sena say the movie “distorts history”. The film features Deepika Padukone as Rani Padmini, Shahid Kapoor as Maharawal Ratan Singh and Ranveer Singh as Sultan Alauddin Khilji. Though they have not seen the movie, leaders of the Karni Sena and several politicians say the 13th-century queen, Padmini, has been disrespected by Mr Bhansali suggesting in his movie that she was romantically involved with Muslim invader Alauddin Khilji.
Mr Bhansali has denied any allusion to a love story, but several BJP-ruled states including Rajasthan have banned the movie, declaring they will not permit it to screen even if it is cleared by the censor board. ‘Padmavati‘ has been produced by Viacom-18; the film’s release was originally planned for December 1, but has been pushed back.
Padmavati Release Date
As per reports in a leading daily, Padmavati is most likely to release on 05th January 0r 12th January 2018. Assuming Padmavati does release on January 5 or 12, it will do extremely good business; more so than usual, as there are no major box-office releases during this time. It will have quite a free run, for its first two weeks, before Akshay Kumar’s Padman and Sidharth Malhotra’s Aiyaary release on January 26.
