Veteran film, television and theatre actor and Padma Shri Tom Alter has died aged 67. The renowned actor and one-time sports writer and author had been battling stage four skin cancer.
Tom Alter was seen in a pivotal role as Guruji is Star Plus show Rishton Ka Chakravyuh (RKC) featuring Narayani Shastri and Mahima Makwana in lead roles.
Tom Alter was battling stage four skin cancer at a Mumbai hospital, where he was admitted earlier in September. He returned home on Thursday and breathed his last on Friday night, said manager Ismail Ansari.
He is survived by his wife Carol, son Jamie and daughter Afshaan.
In an official statement, Tom Alters’s son Jamie Alter said, “It is with sadness we announce the death of Tom Alter, actor, writer, director, Padma Shri, and our dear husband and father. Tom passed away Friday night at home with his family and close family members in attendance. We ask for their privacy to be respected at this time.”
Tom Alter appeared in over 300 films which included the acclaimed Shatranj Ke Khiladi, Sardar and Parinda. His credits include Aashiqui, Junoon, Ram Teri Ganga Maili and Gandhi. Mr Alter’s TV work ranged from Bharat Ek Khoj to Shaktimaan. He also worked in Bengali, Assamese and Telugu cinema. A cricket enthusiast, he also wrote for several sporting journals and was a published author. Tom was also honoured with the Padma Shri in 2008 for his services to the field of arts and cinema.
A memorial service will be held next week for Tom Alter at Malabar Hill.
