TV and Bollywood Celebs react on Kamala Mills Fire tragedy

#KamalaMills – 14 killed, 19 injured in Mumbai’s Kamala Mills Building Fire

A major fire broke out in a building inside the Kamala Mills Compound in Lower Parel area of Mumbai killing at least 14 people, including 12 women, most of them in their twenties and thirties late on Thursday evening, and spread rapidly to nearby restaurants and offices as well.

Most of the casualties were reported from the vicinity of the restaurants that had opened in the 37-acre premises over the last few years. Firefighters battled the blaze for hours before it was finally brought under control as dawn broke.

Tweets from people purportedly at the restaurant when the fire broke out described the chaos that engulfed the spot. “There was a stampede and someone pushed me. People were running over me even as the ceiling above me was collapsing in flames,” said one tweet.

The two gutted pubs are located in the Trade House Building in Kamala Mills compound in Lower Parel area, a popular night spot as well as commercial hub housing several offices including national television channels.

Commenting on the fire at Kamala Mills compound, Kirit Somaiaya, a BJP lawmaker, alleged that the fire department had given clearance illegally to the pubs and restaurants despite violations.
“For me it is because the fire department is giving illegal NOCs (No Objection Certificates) to simultaneously the health department of BMC who are giving permissions to such restaurants,”Mr Somaiaya said.
On Twitter, President Ram Nath Kovind condoled the Kamala Mills fire deaths. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also tweeted, “Anguished by the fire in Mumbai. My thoughts are with the bereaved families in this hour of grief. I pray that those injured recover quickly.”
Actor and Rajya Sabha lawmaker Jaya Bachchan said, “I have been to Kamala Mills, it is like a bhool bhulaiaya, has narrow lanes. So obviously there has been negligence.”
Aditya Thackeray, leader of the Shiv Sena, said he has spoken to the city’s civic body commissioner. “Implementing fire audits of such places are a must, and action will be taken if violations are found,” he tweeted.
