The impact of television serials on Indian society is enormous, Indian audiences are very much attached to the daily soaps and love popular characters in the soap operas and relate to them as well.
The number of serials on the Hindi GEC’s has increased in the recent years with channel like Star Plus, Colors and Zee TV having a tough competition to be a leader in the prime time time slot (6.00 PM to 9.00 PM) Now it became too difficult to climb the TRP rating ladder to notch the top place.
Here is our list of top 10 Indian television serials of 2017. These 10p 10 serials/shows have manged to make their place in BARC India Ratings Top 10 TV serials/shows through out the year 2017. While we have some of the longest running serials in this list, there are some new entrants too….
#10. Kya Haal Mr Panchal on Star Bharat
As the title suggests Kya Haal Mr.Panchal is an Indian comedy series which airs on Star Bharat. The show is produced by Kendra Shinde under the production company Optimystix Entertainment. The show airs every Monday to Friday 8.00 PM.
This is a story of how a mother’s desire turns into dismay. She importunes Lord Shiva that her daughter-in-law should qualities of wisdom, beauty, romantic, culinary skills and religious devotion. With the blessing of Lord Shiva Kanhaiya marries to Pari (beauty), Prathana (Prayer), Panjeeri (North Indian Food), Prema (love) and the Prathiba (talent).
Maninder Singh plays the male lead role Kanhaiya, Kanchan Gupta plays his mother role, Kunti Devi. His wives roles are played by Ojaswi Oberai (Pari), Astha Agarwal (Prathana), Radhika Muthkumar (Panjiri), Reena Agarwal (Prema), and Darti Bhatt (Pratibha).
#9. Shani on Colors
Kaarmaphal Daata Shani is an Indian Hindu mythological television series, which airs on Colors TV. The show is produced by Siddharth Kumar Tiwary under Swastik Productions. It airs every Monday to Friday 9.00 pm.
The series is based on the life of God Shani Dev, is one of the most popular deities that Hindus pray to ward off evil. Shani was born to Surya Dev (son) and goddesses Chhaya (Shade). The story also depicts Vishnu and Shiva as Shani’s mentor. It also shows the childhood of Shani dev and how tough it has appeared.
Rohit Khurana is playing Shanidev role and Kartika Malviya plays younger Shanidev’s role. The beautiful actress Tina Dutta is playing Dhamini (Shani’s wife) role.
#8. Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah on Sab TV
Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah is India’s longest running television comedy series. It went air on 28 July 2008 and it airs from Monday to Friday on SAB TV. The show is produced by Neela Tele Films Private Limited.
The show is based on the column Duniya Ne Undha Chasma written by journalist Tarak Mehta. The story revolves around the eight families of Gokuldham Society. They live like members of the family and stands for each other problems. They often celebrate festivals and events together.
The famous television actor Dilip Joshi plays the main lead Jeethlal Champak Lal Gada and Disha Vakani plays Jeethlal wife role Daya Bhabi. Other cast includes Raj Anandkat (aka Tapu), Amit Bhatt (aka Champaklal), Shailesh Lodha as Taarak Malhotra, Neha Mehta (aka Anjali Tarak Mehta), Tanush Mahashabde (aka Subramaniam Iyer).
#7. Naagin 2 on Colors
Naagin is an Indian Supernatural series which produced by Ekta Kapoor and Shobha Kapoor under Balaji Telefilm Productions. After the success of the first season, the makers launched the second season Naagin 2 in June 2016.
In the first season, Shivanya and Her cousin Sheesha takes the revenge on her parent’s murderers by killing all five of them. In the second season, she gives birth to a baby girl Shivangi. But Shivanya doesn’t want shivangi to become Ichadari Naagin to protect the Naagamani. Later by a saint, she seeks that it can be avoided by marrying Shivangi before she turns 25. Shivanya makes marriage arrangements with Rocky who already in a relationship with Yamini. On the wedding day, Yamini and gang kill wedding guests including Shivangi’s family. Then fierce Shivangi takes the revenge on murderers.
The lead cast of the Naagin 2 is Mouni Roy (aka Shivany/Shivangi), Karanvir Bohra (Rocky Mahendra), Adaa Khan (Sheesha), and Sudha Chandran (aka Yamini).
The makers of the show will soon launch the third installment of Naagin series (Naagin 3) in January 2018. However, the new series will noyt have Mouni Roy and Adaa Khan in lead roles. As per latest reports, Surbhi Jyoti and Anita Hassanandani will be the new leads of Naagin 3.
#6. Yeh Hai Mohabbatein on Star Plus
Yeh Hai Mohabbatein is an Indian Soap Opera aires on Star Plus, Which produced under Balaji Telefilm Production. It is one of the most popular shows which started airing since December 2013.
The story is partially based on Manju Kapoor’s novel Custody. The show starts with the love story of Dr.Ishitha and Raman Bhalla. Ishitha emotionally attaches to Raman’s daughter Ruhi. To give her mother’s love Raman and Ishitha marries to each other. Raman’s Ex-wife Shagun lives with her boyfriend Ashok and Son Aditya. The show took Seven years leap in April 2016, One year leap in Nov 2016 and two years leap in Nov 2017.
Divyanka Tripathi and Karan Patel played the lead roles Ishitha and Raman Bhallala roles.
#5. Udaan on Colors
Udaan is an Indian Television drama which premiered on August 2018 in Colors TV. The show is produced by Bollywood renowned filmmaker Vikram Bhatt and is based on his unreleased movie Udaan. The series also dubbed into several languages including Telugu, Tamil, Armenian and Sinhala.
Udaan is a story of bonded laborers of wealthy landlord Kamal Narayan and chakor is kept as a servant under him. While Chakor’s mother Kasturi Bhuvan is pregnant her father-in-law dies, Bhuvan has left with nothing to donate in his father’s funeral resulting he begs Kamal Narayan for money. For collateral, he keeps Chakor as his servant.
The main cast of the series is Meera Deosthale (aka Chakor Suraj Rajvanshi), Vijayendra Kumaria (aka Suraj Kamal Narayana), Vidhi Pandya (aka Imli Ranvijay Singh), Vikas Bhalla (aka Ranvijay Singh), and Vandana Singh (Ragini Kamal Narayana)
#4. Shakti – Astitva Ke Ehsaas Ki on Colors
Shakti Astitva Ke Ehsaas Ki is an Indian family drama which premiered in May 2016 on Colors TV. The series is produced by Rashmi Sharma Telefilm Limited of Rashmi Sharma.
It’s a story of two sisters Soumya and Surbhi, Surbhi gets all the attention from the family while Soumy disliked by her father and grandmother but adored by mother Nimmi. Soumya is an intersex, except for her mother no one aware of it. In an unexpected situation, she marries to Harman forcefully and she hides the secret from him. But later everyone knows about her secret and bashes her from the society.
The lead cast of the story is Rubina Dilaik (aka Soumya), Vivian Dsena (aka Harman Singh), Roshni Sahota (aka Surbhi), Lakshya Handa (aka Varun Singh), Sudesh Beery (aka Harak Singh) and Kamya Punjabi (aka Preeto).
#3. Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai on Star Plus
Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai is a longest-running Indian television drama surpassing Balika Vadhu with 2554 episode. It is airing since January 12, 2009, from Monday to Friday at 9.30pm on Star Plus. It is produced by Rajan Shahi under Director’s Kutt Productions.
Initially, the story is of young couple Akshara and Naitik Singhania, who lives in the Marwari joint family in Udaipur. It showcases the adjustment issues of the married couple, and how they learn to love each other. Now the story focuses on Naira and Kartik facing the same journey as their parents, with youthful twists.
The initial lead star cast of the show included Hina Khan (aka Akshara) and Karan Mehra (aka Naitik Singhaniya) in lead role. The show took a generation leap after which Hina and Karan qui the show and the show’s story line now focuses on love story of Akashara’s daughter) Naira (essayed by Shivangi Joshi and Kartik (Mohsin Khan) who belongs to the Goenka family.
#2. Kumkum Bhagya on Zee TV
Kumkum Bhagya is an Indian Soap Opera which premiered on on 15 April 2014 and is broadcast on weeknights on Zee TV. The series is produced by Ekta Kapoor under the banner Balaji Telefilms. The show is directed by Sameer Kulkarni and developed by Ekta Kapoor.
It is a love story of musician Abhi who married Pragya. Pragya Arora and Bulbul are two sisters who follow their dreams. Purabh Abhi’s best friend engaged with Abhi’s sister Aliya. But later Bulbul and Abhi fall in love and Aliya misunderstood she thinks that he loves Pragya. As a result, Alia, Abhi, and Tanu make a plan that Abhi to get married Pragya for revenge. After marriage, Abhi knows the truth and Abhi and Pragya come close to each other.
The main cast of the soap opera is Sriti Jha (aka Pragya), Shabbir Ahluwalia (Abhi), Vin Rana (aka Purabh) and Ruchi Savarn (aka Disha Purabh). The show airs every Monday-Firday at 9.00 PM.

Kundali Bhagya is a top rated Indian television drama series of 2017, which airs on Zee TV. The show doing really well it attained highest TRP rating according to BARC India. The series is produced by Ekta Kapoor under Balaji Telefilm Productions.
Kundali Bhagya started as a a spin-off of Kumkum Bhagya. It narrates the story of Pragya’s two sisters Preeta and Shrishti and their attempt to reunite her mother Sarla and their dynamics with the Luthra family.
The lead cast of the show is Shradha Arya (aka Preerta Arora), Dheeraj Dhoopar (Karan Luthra), Manit Joura (aka Rishab Luthra) and Anjum Fakuah (aka Srishti Arora).
